WiFi Wireless networking:  (Questions and answers)

What is Wifi?
In non-technical terms, Wifi is wireless connectivity to a network and generally to the internet.

Wifi can be used in offices to connect multiple computers, to send and receive email or surf the web.

USB adapters allow computers without wifi to connect to wifi networks, both laptops and desktops.

Most laptops today come with wifi, or 802.1g built into the computer.
802.1a and 802.1b are also wireless protocols.  'B' and 'G' are compatible, with 'G' being the fastest 'approved' protocol.  There are other protocols, referred to as Pre-N, and MIMO.

Note: Different manufactures have their own versions of MIMO and Pre-N, but a newwer standard has not been approved at this time. 'G' is still the current fastest 'approved' standard, that workes beween different wireless manufactures.

Is Wifi secure?
Wifi is often NOT secure!  Wireless equipment often comes not secured out of the box, and security needs to be setup.
There are multiple levels of security, Wep, and WPA are common.  Wep security can be hacked while WPA is very secure.
Software firewalls can keep snoopers out of your computer while your wireless is turn on.
